Chad Parva is the Tarai inhabitants’, one of the biggest festivals in Nepal. It’s highly celebrated there in the southern plain area of Nepal, which is called the tarai belt. This festival starts on forth day of the bright fornight of Kartik; and ends on the seventh day (Nov); or we can say it starts two day after the Tihar festival. This is the special festival to worship the sun God and the Goddess Chhadmai who is believed to be the daughter of the Bhramaputra River. The terai people observe this festival in such a manner that the reality of the festival’s enthusiasms can be seen truly here at this time. All the Tarai belt of Nepal is very much influenced by this festival; so Nepal Government grants holiday to only to these area’s people on this day. The sun God and Chhadmai Goddess is worshipped in this festival. The devotees believe that since taking holy bath at this time in the river; and taking audience to the sun God; all of their disease and sins will appear by his grace; and our wishes shall be fulfilled. Also the sonless devotees believe that after the sun’s worship there’s high chances to get the son for him. So because of this strong religions faith, people celebrate this festival as well.
It’s celebrated for four days. On the first day of the credulous women and men devotees take a holy dip in the spring or in the river and put on nicely washed pure clothes or new clothes; then take fasting the day long; and only eat in the evening after the setting sun’s worship. They offer Kharna to the God as a Prasad; the Kharna are made of rice pudding and puri. They stay fasting again on the lord in the evening. Again on the next day too which is the last day of the festival they worship in the morning to rising sun by offering banana, sugarcane, coconut ginger and etc fruits as a Prasad; and accomplish the festival. One should be very careful while on fasting in this festival. It’s believed that if some one is not staying without purely and nicely washed clothes and proper fasting; it’s result immediately appears on him and he may get some kind of problem there. So proper fast and the purity is the most important aspect of this festival. In the beginning day of the festival; all of them go to make worshipping house by the riverbank. They take the banana tree to make the worshipping houses. Throughout the night they spend there singing religious hymns and dancing. The markets of the shopkeeper’s also herd there to sell the merchandises; so because of this the fair looks a very grand spectacular site. It’s hard fasting festival. The women and the men as well take the fasting to ask good luck from the sun god and chhadmai. The devotees do this fasting actually to ask the progeny and to be cured from all kind of diseases. Also it’s believed that by this fasting; the sun god will fulfil any kind of our wishes; that’s why this occasion has taken a very deep influence in the Tarai belts of Nepal. Also devotees promise in this time to the lord to operate a special puja in future if the God provides him the thing, which he asked for from him. The wish achievers arrange a special type of puja at this time; so it adds some extra celestials to the festival. The puja house that they make by the brook, spring or in the riverbank looks very beautiful by their decorations. Devotees believe that; certainly if some one fasts exactly and piously with hard patience then there’s certain that a happy and prosperous life comes in that family’s house. This occasion has been coming in to practice since the time immemorial there in tarai Nepal. Though to be fulfilled all kinds of wishes; this occasion is celebrated mainly for the purpose of getting son to the sonless family; and to be relieved from all kind of diseases. The local legend delineates that; in an ancient time there was a king named priyabrat. He was with out descendents; so he was very unhappy with his life. After the completion of many religious rites he got son but without life. He gave birth always he dead son; so he was in a great trouble. Finally he decided to die one day by himself with the dead son along with his pyre in the crematorium. But wonderfully, a Goddess unearthed there and said that “she is the daughter of river Bhramaputra; and she is called the Chhad Mai; looking the King Priyabrat’s afflictions she promised to revive his son”. Chhadmai reinstated and brought in to life to the king’s dead son. Finally the king became very happy after getting the son; and started to sing the Goddess mother Chhadmai ‘s glory. The legend describes that this phenomenon was happened on the six day of the Kartik bright moon (NOV) because of this the fete was called Chhad Parva in the name of Chhadmai. So since then this festival is believed to be in practice. The sun god’s glory’s is unexplainable. In Mahabharat Drupadi, Kunti and Pandvas had done this fasting to get some kind of power; even in the modern age the mother of Mahatma Gandhi had also done this sun’s fasting and she used not to eat until the sun appears on the sky. Some time when there was no sun shine in the sky for many days in the cloudy day it would be very difficult for her to complete the fasting.
