Ghode Jatra Feu de joie is one of the most spectacular festivals of Nepal. It celebrated grandly organizing horse races and many other interesting activities at Tundikhel in Kathmandu, where thousands of spectators assemble there to look this fair. Nepal Government offers government holiday to the people of the whole country on this day. It falls in the chaitra dark fornight (April). As per the legend the then Prime Minister Junga Bahadur Rana had started this fair after his visit to Great Britain at that time.There is another interesting myth also behind this festival: once in an ancient time there lived a demon called Tundi in kathmandu. The demon had wrecked terror among the kathmanduites and used to kill the children as well. It’s said that, in his name this open yard was called Tundilkhel. After the historic struggle, the citizens killed the demon Tundi and buried at Tundikhel. After that the people started horse riding at that place to pave was thumped with the mighty hooves of the horses on the Tundikhel ground then to make it more interesting some other activities were also started to exhibit there since that time. Government official members also attend to observe the fete. Many people from far away the borough also arrive there to look this feu de joie. The ground is colorfully decorated and the trained riders mount on equally trained horse on contest the pony race, charger race, show jump, tent pegging, handkerchief picking, drill ride, vaulting, Hungarian post, mixed jump and etc items. At last Nepal Government awards the winners amidst this special function there in Tundikhel.
The whole performance is organized by the Nepal Government household cavalry unit, which was established by King surendra vikram shah in 1849. This unit was initially known as Risalla, the unit was renamed “The king’s house holds cavalry” after the recorganization of the Nepal Army in 1952. It’s only responsible to performing the state ceremonies and various other equestrian activities. As per the history’s extract, this cavalry unit exhibited their commendable bravery during the Nepal-Tibet war of 1911-12vs. Since then it’s regularly attracting the masses with its performance during this Ghode Jatra day every year. Nepal police also take part in its different contesting events.
