    Krishnasthami PDF Print E-mail

ImageKrishnasthami falls on the eighth day of Bhadra dark fortnight (August). A great ceremony takes place in every Lord Krishna’s temple throughout Nepal on this day. This auspicious day is celebrated as the Lord Krishna’s birthday all over the world by the Hindus.

Lord Krishna was born about 5000 yr ago in the Bronze Age when the Iron Age was on its inception. Fierceful demons Kangsha, Jarasandha, Kalyabrat, Sishupal, etc were horribly terrifying to the mankind on this earth. Among them Demon Kangsha was the most cruel and sinful Demon. Because of this the earth had become an inexistable place for all. They were very tyrant and cruel demons; so all the people were dastardly horrified by them. Because of crossing the line of injustice, the progenitor mother earth had become very much afflicted; and went to beseech Lord Bharma for the protection of all the people. Lord Bhrama listened the prayer of the earth mother and he did an oracle in the divinely message by saying that “ In the iron age Lord Krishna will be born by taking Lord Vishnu’s incarnation in the fetus of Devaki; and he will be able to kill the tyrant Demon Kangsha to relieve all the mankind from his injustice”. Devaki is the elder sister of Kangsha who was later married with Bashudeva; and Basudeva is the father of Lord Krishna. Basudeva and Devaki gave birth only to Lord Krishna but he was grown up by the bred and care of Yeshoda and Nanda Baba. Nanda Baba and Yeshoda were the married couple and very close friends of Basudev who were staying at Gokul. After a short past Basudeva and Devaki wer married and immediately a heavenly oracle appeared in the Demon Kangsha’s apartment by saying that “Kangsha now you will be killed by the eighth fertilized child from Devaki’s womb for your sin’s punishment”. The moment, Kangsha listened this heavenly oracle he became very much enraged and thought of killing  all the child born from his elder sister Devaki’s womb.

He then ordered his courtiers to imprison Basudev and Devaki in the Jail and told them to bring the entire child begotten by Devaki at him. After a few months’ period the child started too born and Basudeva took them all to Kangsha’s palace. Kangsha started to kill the entire child with his sword. When the seventh child was born Basudeva got the divine oracle to take the child at Rohini’s house. That child was Balram (Lord Krishna’s elder brother) and Rohini was Basudev’s another wife. The Jail’s the entire door and Basudeva’s handcuffs were automatically unfastened; and no jailors noticed these entire heavenly phenomenon. Then Basudev did the same as per the oracle. Kangsha came to inspect the seven children there but when he did not find that there he became very much infuriated and shouted a lot to Basudeva. Basudeva told as per the oracle that the child was born dead; and aborted; and thrown it away because of the untimely birth; then kangsha returned back from there. When the eighth child was about the born the same oracle appeared there in the Jail only to Basudeva and said “oh Bashudva please take this child at Yeshoda’s house and bring it swapping with the girl child born there at her house”. The Jail’s door and Basudev’s handcuffs were unpleased immediately and automatically; and no Jailors again noticed anything at this time too. Basudev took that girl child at Kangsha’s place and Kangsha immediately started to kill that child with his sword; but the child flew away shortly from there in the air and said that “oh! Sinful Kangsha I am Goddess Bhagawati and you can not kill me, the child to kill you has already been born at Yeshoda’s house; and now its definite that you will be killed by him; and your death is very near; and all the frightened and tortured people by you will be relieved.”

When Kangsha saw this incredible phenomenon truly before him he again got angered; and again thought of some other plans to kill that child born at Yeshoda’s house. Kangasa had an elder sister named putana who could flow the poisonous milk from her breast. So he ordered his sister to kill that child by feeding her venomous milk. But when she was feeding the milk; the child sucked all of her milk, and she herself died in the contrary. Kangsha planned many conspiracies to kill the child but all of his efforts were all in vain. Finally one day he arranged a Bow’s yangya (Bow worshiping) and thought of killing him by hitting him with the arrow. He invited his nephew and immovable but Lord Krishna broke all the bows very easily and Kangsha was very much surprised to look Krishna’s strength. He then brought his strong elephant to kill Krishna; but Krishna lifted easily to that elephant and laid down to it on the ground. He then sent his heavy wrestlers to kill Krishna but all of them were killed in reverse. Finally Kansha came himself to fight with Lord Krishna had brought the bright day for the victims; and they all stayed happily. He had come on this earth to relieve all the virtuous people and to kill the sinful. So this day Krishasthami is celebrated joyously singing Lord’s hymns and taking fast among the Hindu society all over the world.

Lord Krishna has done many miracles during his staying on this earth which all are described in the the Holy Krishna Charitra. A grand religious fair takes place at Krishna Mandir at Patan where His Majesty the king and Queen also go to grace the festival and receive the Tika and Prasad from there by the Priests. Thousands of people flock to see his festival in patan on this day. Another subsidiary fete takes place at ISKCON temple located on the northern part of kathmandu near the Budhanilkantha Mandir Narayanthan. ISKCON is the Holy Hindu international organization where many white complexioned foreigners have been proselytized in the Hindu religion. Nepal Government grants this Krishnasthami day as the Government Holiday in Nepal
