This is believed to be the most pious month among the twelve months because the most charitable donations are believed to be the best during this month. The day has become very significantly pious because the sun travels towards the line of Capricorn on the earth since this day; then the cold wave falls down slowly and the long day appears slowly. Thousands of devotees flock in the reputed river banks to take the holy dip to earn the virtue after spilling their all past sins in the holy rivers. Hindu scriptures believe that the holy rivers have the divinely powers to cleanse the vices; this is the reason why the Hindus prefer to have the holy dip in the river. Great religious fair takes place in the renowned rivers of Nepal and India on this day. After taking the holy bath the devotees spend there dancing and singing the lords hymns. The most pious aspect of this holy day is to donate some thing to the daughters, nieces, nephews, poor and the Bhramin priests. Scripture says that if we don’t donate in this life we have to become the poor in our next life to come; so people donate at least some thing to the aforesaid personnel as per their capacity on this day. The nieces; nephews; daughters; and brother in laws are invited by the fathers or brothers on this day at their houses to feed and donate for their respect; like the invitation on teej, Janai purnima and Dasain.
People wake up early in the morning; besmear their houses with cow’s dung mixed red mud; go to take the holy bath in the river; then place tika to the daughters; donating them money and sweet foods. People prepare a lot of boiled yams, sweet-potatoes to serve the guests and to eat themselves; and the hard molasses balls mixed with sesame are also very popular item to serve on this day; which is called the Tilko Laddu. A special grand religious congregation takes place in DevghatRiver’s confluence; which is on the way to ChitwanNational Park. Similarly the fair takes place at Dhunge Sangu in pokhara; BeniRiver in Bajlung on the way to Jhomsong trek and at etc places of Nepal.
Rivers are remembered the most pious agent in the Hindu mythology. When Bhrama created this universe he offered the cleansing power of sins to the rivers; that’s why the devotees go to take the holy bath in the rivers. An immense, huge and gigantic Maghe Sankrati Mela takes place at Ganga Sager in north India where millions of devotees attend to dip there in that holy river. This is among the most spectacular biggest religious fete of the world. After the dip the Devotees bring the holy water from the river in a file and keep it in their houses to offer the neighbor who are financially weak to travel for the holy deep. Thedevotees who can’t go to take the holy dip; they are sipped and sprinkled with his file’s water; and they also get the same fruit as equal to the devotees get who traveled there for pilgrimage in the river. So the other devotees also come to ask the water from them.
Hindu devotees spell everyday early in the morning the name of the river Gange and Kasi pilgrimage saying Hara-Hara Gange; Kashi-Kashi; while taking their face bath or body bath to ask good omen from her. Definitely who spell these chants at the face bathing time in the morning; all of them have been found received happy life, which is truly to say as well. So in this way the holy dip in the rivers on this maghe Sankranti pious Day has gota very high importance in the Hindu society . even the non-Hindus too go to take the holy bath in the rivers since they have also a very great belief in it.
