Like the neighbouring districts of Rasuwa and Dolakha, the Sindhupalchowk district boasts many tourist attractions. Scenic landscape and floral and faunal diversity and cultural variations have made the district an important place for trekkers, explorers and researchers.
The Panchpokhari and Bhairabkunda areas have emerged as major tourist spots over the years. The areas have come to limelight after some tourism entrepreneurs started promoting these mind-boggling places as trekking destinations. These areas have been highlighted at home and abroad as ideal destinations for new rural tourism development. Situated at an elevation of 4,200 metres above sea level, the Bhairavkunda area offers a spectacular view of the entire Rolwaling range. One can also have a clear view of Mt. Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, Dorje Lhakpa, Aama Bhumare Rolwaling and many more mountain peaks of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China.
Bhairavkunda is considered as an important place both from the points of view of natural beauty and religion. Foreign trekkers can complete their memorable trek to this area in 10 days. Bus services are available from Kathmandu to Jalbire settlement in Sindhupalchowk. The route passes through Banepa, Dhulikhel, Panchkhal valley, Dolalghat and Balephi. Trekkers can see different historic and cultural monuments at Jalbire and stay overnight there. The following day, their journey begins early in the morning. They move to Chanaute in Baramchi Village Development Committee (VDC) by observing the beautiful rural settlements, mountain peaks, rivers and green forests. After completing their five-hour trek, they reach Chanaute and stay there.
The journey of the third day also begins early in the morning. In five hours, trekkers can get in Khanigaon village. It is believed that an iron mine is in the village. As the trail is very steep and difficult, trekkers may feel exhausted. But the panoramic views of the mountains, rivers and mixed rural settlements may soothe their pains. More than 95 percent of the people living in this crowded settlement belong to the Newar community. They are said to have been migrated there from Bhaktapur during the time of attack by the late Prithvi Narayan Shah. Normally, trekkers observe the culture, lifestyle and activities of the local people on the fourth day. The next day, they set out their journey early in the morning. They trek along a forested trail during the whole day. They can have view of several mountain peaks while on trek. Bird watching is another attraction of the trek. After trekking for about 4 hours, they stay at a tented camp. On the sixth day, trekkers trek only about 3-4 hour because of high altitude. They can enjoy the scenic view on this day as well. The following day, trekkers will reach Bhairavkunda in three hours? trek. If the weather is clear, they may enjoy more because they can have very close mountain views. They spend their night at a tented camp. On the eighth day, trekkers reach the hilltop of Bhairavkunda and have a sunrise view. There is also a trail linking the area to Tibet. They can take photographs of the lake, mountains and the whole area. The scenic mountain view from the area is quite unparalleled. After completing about five hours of trek down the hill, trekkers arrive in a Sherpa village, which is also known as Tashithang, and stay overnight there. The next day, after passing through Dugunagadhi and Larcha areas, they reach Tatopani and the FriendshipBridge. On the 10th day, they may either return to Kathmandu or enjoy Bunjy jumping or whitewater rafting on the Bhotekoshi river. Interested trekkers can extend this trip to Panchpokhari as well. The route to Panchpokhari area passes through Chautara, the headquarters of Sindhupalchowk district. Keeping in view high prospects of tourism development, the concerned government bodies need to work together with other local stakeholders for the development of required infrastructure. Promoting this area as a tourist destination would definitely help contribute to improving the living conditions of the local people.
