The Trekking Season The trekking in Nepal means walking and living among the Himalaya, which offers such a spectacular beauty that walkers return over and over to this country to try out new and different routes. But its not only the natural beauty that attracts repeat visitors to Nepal. The culture and ethnic wealth encountered while on the roads and trails of the country is enough enticement for many trekkers. The three most popular trekking areas were the alpine theater of Langtang near the Kathmandu valley, the spectacular Annapurna Region north of Pokhara and the classic Everest route. The Annapurna region, with its deep valleys and high mountains around the Annapurna Himal (8,091 m), encompasses a wide variety of people and terrain, ranging from subtropical jungle in the south to dry, high plateau backdrops in the north. It thus draws the maximum number of trekkers of various nationalities every year. The circuit itself takes three weeks to complete, taking the trekkers through the high pass of Thorung La at 5,380 m into the lower Mustang and Kali Gandaki river valley. There are excellent lodges the way, with modern amenities and a wide variety of local and international foods.
Another popular trekking region is the Everest region trekking. There are two main reasons why this trek is so popular: to see up close the highest peak in the world, Mt. Everest, and to interact with the legendary Sherpas, who are known for their fine mountain climbing and portering skills. The Everest area also has the best close-up view of the mountains of Nepal. The vibrant Namche Bazaar contains many lodges and shops selling modern amenities. Other attractions are the Everest views hotel, the highest hotel in the world at 3,870 m, and the Tengboche monastery, a Budhist retreat with a spectacular backdrop of Ama, Dablam and other peaks. No wonder, trekkers often speak of a mystical feeling they encounter in this region. The Langtang-Helambu region north of Kathmandu bagged third place in the number trekkers. The langtang-Helambu region is filled with unsurpassed beauty: stunning mountain views, thick forests, fast rivers and interesting Sherpa villages, the Gosaikunda lake (4,298 m) at the northern end of the trek is sacred because Lord Shiva is said to have created it with a thrust of his trident into the ground. Mustang region also attracted more trekkers this year. This region in the Upper Himalaya is close to Tibet (China), and therefore its people, religion and culture are heavily influenced by their Tibetan origins. The land here is desert-like, with harsh winters and dry soil. But Mustang’s aridity also makes it very beautiful, with deep gorges, ancient forts, eroded ridges, and lofty terraces. Thus it attracts many trekkers, who don’t mind the several days of hard walking it takes to reach this area. The area of Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world at 8,586 m, is another popular trekking destination of Nepal. Straddling Nepal’s eastern border, Mt. Kanchenjunga towers over Sikkim. The trekking trail in the region starts from Taplejung and spirals up northeast through Rai and Limbu farm country. Traversing a high-walled valley, trekkers reach an immense glacier that comes off one of Kanchenjunga’s sides. It is here that the view is magnificent, as a whole entourage of peaks loom in the sky. There were other regions that also attracted trekker like Manaslu Region, Lower Dolpo, near Dhaulagiri, and Kanjroba peaks had many trekkers. Trekking in the Himalayan Country Nepal continues to attract a large number of travelers. That is not too surprising, given that eight of the ten highest peaks in the world and innumerable variety of people and cultures are always attracting visitors for a closer and intimate look.
