Helambu trekking is one of the famous short and easy treks of Nepal and easily access from Kathmandu. Helambu offers many Monastery visit, Rhododendron forest (flower; March/April), superb mountain views, picturesque Sherpa settlements, friendly people and after all unspoiled culture of the area. Helumbu Trekking is actually the cultural trek because the travelers can experience the unique culture of the Sherpa people of this region. This trek is more like cultural trek than mountain and glacier expeditions. People here call themselves Sherpas but their relationship with the Sherpa of Solu Khumbu is distant. The dialects spoken by these sherpas are also different. Buddhist cultural experience, beautiful Helambu village which is inhabited by Sherpas, beautiful mountain views, a lot photographic opportunities, ecologically well managed bio-diversity.
Trekkers can start their journey from Kathmandu after driving by bus/car to Sundarijal, which is just 13km from Kathmandu. Then one can continue ascend to Chisopani where one can spend first night just outside valley. Chisopani offer great view of mountain and landscape. Then one can make almost a circle going through Khtumsang, Tharapati, Tarkeghyang, sarmathang and finally to Melamchi pul where trekker take bus to Kathmandu.
Just to the north of Kathmandu are two lovely regions where one may experience Tamang and Sherpa’s day to day life, temperate forest and alpine pastures, glaciers, lakes and snowy peaks. Trekker over here can stay in highland monastery villages and small settlements in pristine forests. Just Above Helambu is a mountain pass through the lakes of beautiful Gosainkunda reaching the valley of Langtang. Gosaikunda lake itself is located at 4,380 meters. It is believed that Gosaikunda is sacred to Lord Shiva and every summer there throng thousands of Hindu devotees to take a holy dip into the waters of the holy lake. Nearby are other lakes including Nagkunda, Bhairavkunda, Saraswatikunda and Suryakunda. The trek passes through a varied landscape ranging from evergreen forests, cascading waterfalls and turbulent streams to sub-alpine grasslands and stark, beautiful mountainsides. The Helambu trek is one of the easiest and provides the spectacular views of the Langtang (7245m), Ganesh Himal (7405m), Dorje Lhakpa (6990m) and other small mountains of Langtang Himalayan range. The warm and friendly people of Helambu are mostly Buddhists.
