A new wave has hit Nepalese Tourism, revising the traditional track that channeled tourists to the twin attractions of the mountains and culture. This new excitement that is thrilling visitors is sports tourism. Yes, Nepal is developing, gradually but with energy, as a sports destination. The multi-athletic event attracted top international athelets from all over the world, providing that Nepal can host international sporting events with flair and professional know how. The ministry of tourism should encourage sports tourism in Nepal by actively linking sports with tourism. Moreover, it should provide a free hand to different associations involved in tourism and sports. The government should channel more funds for development of sports programs.
Another area that is fast being developed is a sports that comes very naturally to Nepal’s topography: mountain biking. Nepal’s extraordinarily riverse terrain and numerous tracks and trails create an ideal venue for mountain biking championships. Long distance running is another sports that has found an easy home in Nepal. Professional runners have discovered that thumping through the architecturally splendid towns of the valley and through the hilly terrians makes for races unequalled anywhere in the world. Kathmandu international Marathon is a yearly race held in January that attracts a large number of athletes from all over the world. The Marathon’s course consists of undulating tarmac and stone-paved streets through the two cities of Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. The race begins at Kathmandu Durbar Square and goes around the Ring Road to Bhaktapur, after which it takes the road along the perimeter of Patan City to be back in Kathmandu. The Marathon is open anybody over 18 years of age. But there is more. Other sports activities include paragliding, bungee jumping etc. Given all these sporting adventures Nepal has to offer, it is clear that the Nepal is emerging as a giant coliseum, where the professional sportsmen and women from around the world can converge for some serious play and lots of fun. For the tourism industry, therefore, sports is rapidly becoming the new name of the game.
