Working as a volunteer abroad in Nepal during your vacation or gap year between school and university will be an experience that you will never forget. However, although Nepal may be the destination of your dreams, your volunteer work will not be easy - but it will be very rewarding. When you make the decision to volunteer abroad in Nepal you will be assigned to one of three possible locations, irrespective of the type of voluntary work you do. These are:a) The well-known Kathmandu, where you will be working only around 40 minutes from the principal tourist center of the country. This is the capital city of Nepal, and as a result offers all you need in the way of shopping, restaurants and internet cafes, and you will be able to spend your free time here if you wish.
b) Pokhara, the adventure center of the country that can be used as a base for trekking and rafting. If you love adventure holidays, then Pokhara will meet your needs and more, while you can also help the local children as a volunteer in Nepal. c) Chitwan is for the nature lovers. It offers a multitude of animals and birds, and 65 species of butterfly. Chitwan is home to the single-horned Asian rhinoceros, one of the rarer species of rhinoceros. If you love nature, this is the base for you, and it even offers over 70 species of grasses. There are a number of programs available to a volunteer abroad in Nepal, though you would be principally involved with child care, teaching English and health care, because these are the areas with which the Nepalese mostly need your help. Let's consider each of these individually and discuss how you personally can help these people when you volunteer in Nepal. Volunteer in Nepal in Child Care People who have worked in Nepal during their vacation have described it in terms of being 'butt clenching terrifying' to 'breathtaking' while also commenting on the reality of the sickness and disease they find among the children here. Many of the children in the care homes here are orphans, while others have simply been abandoned or even given to 'brokers'. Keep in mind that it is a different way of life here than you have been used to, and in many such societies children are either unwanted or commodities - sometimes given away by parents to give them the chance of a better life. You can help them have that. Your work will involve becoming a brother or sister to them and offering them the emotional support that they need while helping them in their education and with their homework. You will also help to run the centers and to help with the cleaning and in preparing meals. Teaching English as a Volunteer in Nepal You will be able to teach English either in normal schools or within monasteries. Here is what is involved in each of these: a) You will be helping teachers to teach English in Nepalese schools and to improve the vocabulary of the children. English is becoming increasingly more important in the country, and being able to speak it will be of enormous benefits to the children. You might be working alongside a regular Nepalese teacher, or be teaching a class yourself, and in so doing not only will you be able to introduce new teaching methods to the teachers you work with, but you will also be able to learn from them. Teaching in Nepal, like most people who volunteer in Nepal, involves more than just you passing on your knowledge, but also you gaining knowledge because many Nepalese have their own teaching methods from which you can learn to your personal benefit. Most Nepalese teachers are very competent with excellent teaching methods: they just need help with classes of up to 50 children. b) You may also have the opportunity to teach English in monastery schools, so that the students will be able to learn from those Buddhist scriptures that have been published in English and also pass their Buddhist teaching methods to the whole world. Not only will you plan your own lessons, but you will also generate games and other activities to supplement your teaching. Health Care Education Your work here as a volunteer abroad in Nepal will be to educate the local communities in health care and basic sanitation so that they are more able to avoid the various diseases that can result from poor hygiene conditions. The people here may not be aware of the importance of personal hygiene and the basics of food storage and preparation, for example, and the project needs your help in teaching them. It is easier to be proactive in preventing disease than to provide the resources to deal with the results of poor basic hygiene practices. As a volunteer in Nepal you can offer invaluable help in offering your services during your vacation for any of these three specific aspects of the work involved. It is well known by those that have done it that, when you volunteer abroad in Nepal, you will learn as much from them as you are able to offer, and that it will be an experience of a lifetime. Not to mention the lifetime friends you will make between your fellow-volunteers and the Nepalese with whom you associate.
