Global tourism industry sees boom |

Its not only Nepal that saw a healthy growth in tourist arrivals, this year, the global tourism trends also witnessed with sustained growth rate of the past 10 years. The global tourism trend continued to thrive with an estimated 5.7 per cent average growth during 2007. Growth will be driven by the emerging markets and the developing markets and the developing countries, according to 2007 preliminary results of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). It confirms resilience regarding external factors such as turbulence in financial markets increasing interest rates, tighter credit conditions, rising fuel prices and security and health issues. For the coming year 2008, only a very slight softening in the trade is excepted marketing a growth rate of only five per cent across the globe. Current issues may start to weaken consumer confidence.

Thanks to the peace process, hotel business of Nepal is back in shape and blooming like the spring flower. Today hotels have triumphed over others and come up as the winners in the market with its excellent marketing strategies and plans. In 2007 we saw many hotels going under renovation, some were upgraded to five stars and some had additional attractions for their customers. On the whole, it was a lucky year where the business prospered to its best. Summarizing 2007 “ It was a very prosperous year as we saw tremendous increase in tourists arrival. Our strategy was to tie up with various travel and trekking agents and promote the hotel in various markets via their packages. We also worked very closely with corporate house by offering attractive rates and providing personalized services in terms of conferences, meeting and conventions keeping in mind the variety of the clients’ need”, said Bharat Johi, Resident Manger of Hotel Himalaya.

It would not be an exaggeration if we say that the year 2007 has been the year of hope and rejoice about for the tourism sector in Nepal. With the advent of peace and stability, Nepal has again emerged as a major tourist destination. As Prachanda Man Shrestha, CEO, Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) said, “After almost nine years, we have seen positive a growth in tourism in 2007. We have gained the confidence of international visitors for Nepal as a tourist destination.” The palpable growth in tourist arrival has been a mojor boost for all the stakeholders of this sector. Ram Kaji, president, Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA) added, “ This year around five million tourist came to Nepal and this is a huge encouragement for us.” Besides the huge tourist arrival the significant increase in number of international airlines operating in Nepal provided yet another positive indication for this sector.

A Nepali trekking guide from Parbat has bagged a British Tourist Guide Award for his outstanding service. Shesh Kant Sharma, 33, of Karkineta-2, Lamachaur of Parbat was awarded the ?Paul Morrison Award-2006? for his commendable works as a trekking guide by a British travel magazine ? Wanderlust.

According to A press release from Nepal Tourism Board on Tourists Arrival for October 2007, the visitors’ arrival data from Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport for the month of October 2007 shows the healthy growth of 18 percent, up by 6617 compared to the corresponding month of last year. Some of the growth indicators are as follows: China showed a robust growth of 133% and Sweden by 91.7%, and other countries; Denmark by 88.6% Austria by 56.9% Norway by 55.4% Belgium by 50.3% South Korea by 37% Germany by 33.3% Bangladesh by 51.1% Sri Lanka by 56.6% all showing positive indication of increase in Tourists inflow in the country.
