KATHMANDU: Integration of the Nepal Army (NA) and the UCPN-Maoist People’s Liberation Army (PLA) can be a plus point in tourism promotion for Nepal Tourism Year (NTY) 2011, said former tourism minister Hisila Yami.
Speaking at a discussion programme of former tourism ministers, Yami insisted on
the promotion of cultural identity, public discussion on NTY 2011 and the PLA’s integration into the Nepal Army adding that the integration could be utilised as a political product for tourism promotion.
According to Yami, though the commitment paper presented to former ministers representing different political parties has points regarding no strikes and bandhs during Nepal Tourism Year 2011 the possibility of strikes and bandhs cannot be ruled out even though these do not affect the tourism sector.
NTY programme implementation committee national coordinator Yogendra Shakya during the discussion programme on NTY 2011 and its official launch, presented the commitment paper to the former tourism ministers for the commitment from their respective party leader to avoid strike and bands to the tourism sector as a whole.
Former tourism minister Yankila Sherpa insisted on developing a special policy that would be favourable to tourists arriving in Nepal.
Sherpa also mentioned Nepal as being an expensive tourist destination. Meanwhile, Kuber Sharma suggested building a 90-metre high Buddha statue at Lumbini and making air connection between Bodh Gaya and Lumbini.
“There is a need for 24 hour operations at Tribhuwan International Airport with properly managed airport taxi service,” said Budhi Raj Bajracharya adding that there must be direct flight between Sri Lanka and Kathmandu to attract Buddhist tourists here.
The official launch of NTY 2011 is scheduled for February 26 at Tundikhel. Under the programme, a peace torch will be taken from Lumbini to Kathmandu and the NTY 2011 secretariat head will pass the torch to a high-profile personality while parades from six different places in the valley will be held.
