    Tatopani means hot water, and since time immemorial, hot water gushing from the womb of the earth has fascinated humans all over the world. In Nepal, too, thermal springs have piqued the interest of yogis, philosophers, and medicine men and ordinary people. The soothing power of hot water on tired muscles. Aching bones and tense minds have helped tatopanis to become pilgrimage spots where men and women ease physical disorders and gain divine blessings. The curative power of thermal springs has been known to the Nepalese since very ancient times. Bathing in these springs is especially recommended for those suffering from rheumatism, gout, and skin diseases.

    While in Nepal. Travelers may be interested in visiting hot water springs in the country. In terms of geology, hot springs in Nepal are located near thrust faults where rain or surface water penetrates into the high temperatures there, and ultimately rises again to the surface through fissures or outcrops of rock to form numerous beautiful hot springs. Mineralization of the spring depends on the chemical composition of the soils the water passes through.
    There are many hot springs in Nepal widely distributed on the flanks of the lesser Himalayas, and they are generally located in unusually beautiful surroundings. This article will offer an overview of the springs and their locations in Nepal, and hopefully you will be able to plunge in during your trekking adventures.

     

    One of the closet springs to kathmandu is the popular Tatopani near kodari. Situated conveniently at an altitude of 1396 meters, the water of this spring is alkaline with sight sulphuric odur. Activites here take a festive turn in December when thousands of people from the surrounding villages, as well as from the kathmandu valley, throng here to take baths. Tatopani at kodari can be reached from kathmandu by car in approximately three hours.

    Another trekking area close to kathmandu is the langtang valley. Dotted with wild Himalayan flowers, cool mountain streams, and the sky-piercing peaks of Lantang Lirung, the Langtang valley is charming. While on a trek to the at syabrubensi. It offers an ideal retreat for those seeking peace, quiet, and a pleasurable hot bath. Syabru is an attractive village of the Tamang and Bhote Tribes. From the village, the main trail drops down towards a river. There is a superb camping site in the midst of a forest by the riverside. The most convenient way to reach the Langtang valley is to travel by bus to Dunche and walk for two days to syabrubensi.

    The closest hot springs to pokhara, about fifteen kilometers north of the city in an idyllic setting on the bank of the seti River, is a hot spring known as kharpani. Surrounded by hills, Machhapuchre and Picturesque villages that cling to the hillsides, you cannot help appreciating the splendour and beauty of kharpani. Nearby is a dense forest, an ideal habitat for wildlife.

    The most popular trek in the pokhara region is through the Annapurna sanctuary. It is a Glacier-framed amphitheatre formed by a circle of the range. Located at the bank of the Modi Khola on the trail to the Annapurna  sanctuary, there are hot springs at Jhinu. Because of the close proximity to chhomrong, a Gurung village, these hot springs have been popular both with trekker and the local people. The Jhinu hot springs consists of two bathing pools, one for males and the other for females. A retention wall has been built to provent damage to the hot springs from floods and landslides. The Jhinu hot springs have great local and religious significance. During the sri panchami festival, local people take baths in the hot springs and sacrifice animals in a temple nearby.

    On the Annapurna circuit, manang valley, a longitudinal gorge, makes a deep furrow behind the great Annapurna range. There are hot springs located at the bank of the marsyangdi River, just below the headquaters of the Manang District.

    Located at an altitude of about 270 meters, Jomsom is situated in the upper kali Gandaki valley. It is the gateway to mukinath, a famous pilgrimage site, and it is also part of the Annapurna Circuit. On the west bank of the kali Gandaki River, at the foot of a hillock, are other hot springs. Spring water flows at thirty liters per second here. Jomsom is well connected with kathmandu and pokhara by air, and it can be reached by foot within six to seven days from pokhara.

    Thermal weters can be found in other areas of the kali Gandaki valley. The hot springs, located on the right bank of the kali Gandaki River east of Tatopani village, remain popular with trekkers going to Muktinath. The springs can be reached within three days from pokhara.

    Gushing out from the ground at a temperature of 40 degree to 70 degree, the water is classified as slightly alkaline since it has bicarbonate sulphate in it. Farther west of the annapurnas, Jumla District has a number of hot springs well-known for their medicinal qualities. These hot springs lie in areas of astounding beauty. Some eleven kilometers to the north east of khalanga Bazaar there are three more thermal springs with slightly acidic water.

    There are also other hot springs located on the bank of the Tila Nadi River just below the Tatopani village. People from the surrounding districts visit this place in large numbers during December when medicinal baths are believed to be especially effective.

    In an area blessed with diverse geographical structures, far western Nepal also has thermal water resources. On the bank of the seti River at a distance of three hours walk north of chainpur is another Tatopani, a pilgrimage site with an envirment conducive to meditation. There are hot springs located on both banks of the river.

    There are other little-known hot springs located at mayana, near Bauli Gad and Jeoli Gad. The springs are accessible only during the summer. About two hours walk to the north of Darchula Bazaar is Tapoban, a famous pilgrimage site, also noteworthy for its peaceful environment. The water temperature of the hot springs here ranges from 50 degree to 73 degree. Odourless, the water has a high content of silica, calcium, and has a high content of silica, calcium, and potassium.

    Darchula’s second important hot spring lies in a charming setting in a narrow valley of the Ritha Gad River. Slightly acidic, the water is mildly hot, Located at an altitude of 1829 meters it may three days’ walk. Near the village of Barpata is another thermal spring. Though not as hot as some of the other springs, the water of the spring is still soothing. It is also used by the local people for bathing and washing. Barpata can be reached in a five-day walk from Darchula Bazaar.

    Located some seventy-five meters downstream from the bridge on the Mahendra Rajmarg Higway is a hot spring in the vincinity of a sandstone cliff in the forested Siwalik Hills. The water temperature of the thermal spring ranges between 36 degree to 40 degree. Situated at the bank of the Budi Gandaki River, on a trekking route to the manasalu Base Camp, is a small peaceful place known for its hot springs. Trekkers who are aware of this location always stop for awhile and take time for a bath. Nearby, worthy of a side trip, is a stream known for its excellent fishing for Himalayan “Asala” trout.

    Other hot springs have also been reported in certain areas of the country, and visitors have found little-known tatopanis pleasant places to relax after a long day’s hike. You may discover a new one yourself! So while traveling, if you hear the word tatopani, you can spend extra hours resting in a warm pool, easing your tired body in water heated by the earth.
