The word Himalayas in Sanskrit means the house of Snow. In earlier days, the Hindu religion whose main works were in Sanskrit, was flourishing in the Indian subcontinent. People have also adored the Himalayas as adobe of lord shiva (the God of Destruction) from where all life giving water starts its earthly journey. From the ancient time people have considered the Himalayas as abode of God for the marvelous beauty and scenic grandure peace and tranquility. As well as whole lives Nepal are regulated by Himalayas in the form of barrier to the meteorogical regime. With the result heavy population could thrive in the Indo-genetic basin. In the past people tried from the worldly affairs have tried to get peace by wandering in the Himalayas and living on wild roots. Many sages or saints in Riri Khola had contemplated and in the north near the Tibetan border, many Gumba, Chorten Stupa are located where happy lamas are still worshipping the God of peace the Lord Buddha.
Seeing the calm, crystal clear nature, in the past, it has been a place of contemplation for yogi (the one who has renounced the world) and Himalayas has inspired the inner feeling of many poets including the Kings. In scientific world the snow man (Yeti) has stirred the inquisition of the world that how man can live in such a cold environment. For geologists it has tantaised the mystery of its formation. In the recent years the wandering in Himalayas have taken a new shape i.e. instead of religious pursuit, people trek for pleasure and skill to reach the summit of the mountains. Others for peace and rest or scientific study of the terrain (Geology, Botany, Human and Culture). In fact walking in Himalayans can cure many disease i.e. brain and heart and give stimulus to these systems. A physically and mentally tired man or woman if takes a trekking in Himalayas, will return with vigor and balance of mind and inspiration by seeing what struggle people did in stone or medieval ages for their survival. Now the modern amenities are available for trekking and it has become the most common. Now few Nepalese are also engaged in trekking. With the advent of mountaineering it has become a sport ground and a challege to scale the high peaks. The first unsuccessful attempt to climb mount everest (Sagarmatha) was early as 1922 AD. After the several attempts had been made and many people lost their lives then only in 29th may 1953 Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norkay Sherpa were successful to conquer or scale the highest peak of the world i.e. mount Everest. Latter Himalayan expedition of many countries had scaled peaks one after the another. For the Climate of Nepal, Himalayas had played an important role. Had there been no barrier the climate would have been quite different, i.e. extreme climate of cold and heat with desert condition. For pilot it has become a challenge to cross Himalayas ( The First Nepalese Pilot with his 727 crossed the Himalayas was late Gopal Shrestha when King Birendra China). For botanist it is interesting to find different varieties of plants at the base of Himalayas where the climate became favorable. The same plant Rhododendron which has over several hundred species and mountains a height 9 to 12 m, becomes practically a shrub and pine is changed to small plant locally call Dhupi in Himalayas. The influence of Himalayas was tremendous on the variation of life, culture, tradition and economy of the highlanders like Sherpa, Thakali, Manange and Gurung. And for anthropologist and sociologist this has provided ample food for research. Recently thousands of tourist belonging to all over the world started coming into Nepal to see its scenic grandeur, peace, tranquility and its influence on the socio-cultural and traditional patterns of high land settlers.
