Royal Chitwan National Park is the eldest and one of the finest wildlife safari destinations in Asia. It is located in the south-west of the capital city Kathmandu. It covers a total land area of over 932 sq. km. including sal forests and tall reeds-land. The park is fully covered with dense, tropical, deciduous, rain forests and bounded by Rapti, Narayani and Reu rivers which often change their course, resulting in the formation of several ox-bow lakes, swamps and grasslands. The grasslands form a diverse and complex community with over 50 species. There are more than 45 species of mammals in the endangered one-horned rhinoceros, royal Bengal tiger and the gharial crocodile along with many other common species such as gaur, wild elephant, four-horned antelope, striped hyena, pangolin genetics dolphin, minor lizard and spotted python. Other wildlife found in the park include the sambar, chital, hog deer, barking deer, Solth bear, palm civet, langur and rhesus monkey. There are over 450 species of birds in the park. Among them the endangered birds are Bengal florican, giant hornbill, lesser florican cormortant, black and white storks. More than 45 species of amphibians and reptiles occupy the park. The park is actively engaged in the scientific studies of several species of wild fauna and flora. The park was designated as a world Heritage Site in 1984. Meghauli: Meghauli is one of the richest villages in Chitawan in terms of wildlife, different cultures and sports is located in the adjacent of Royal Chitwan National Park. Meghauli village touches over 25 km of the borders of the park and is situated on the banks of the Rapti and Narayani River. Situated at 172 km from kathmandu, Meghauli is in the western part of Chitwan district. It is more charming and attractive than other places around the National Parks for wildlife safari and bird watching. The huge 25 km long community forest is another eye catching object of Meghauli. The new concept had been materialized for the tourism development in Meghauli. National Park entrance gate, Elephant stable, view tower, Elo Park. National crocodile dreediy pond and Mediunal herbal farming in the buffer zone are the main attractions in the Meghauli. A part from these, Meghuli has excellent potential for the establishment of resorts and hotels. Rhino Resort Chital lodge, Chautari lodge and restaurant etc are serving to some extent who come to visit Megauli. It is the gateway to tiger tops the oldest jungle lodge in Royal Chitwan National Park.
Rafters, after long exciting and adventurous rafting trip end at the Golaghat, confluence of Narayani and Rapti River. It is the best location to see the sunset over the western hemisphere and northern panoramic view of the Himalayas, Meghauli is the example of good balancing between human settlements and the wild life with the natural environments. It is the best area of bird watching (Bengal florican, Giant hornbill, lesser florican, black stork and white stork) site seeing and varieties of wildlife. Meghauli is also popular for seeing of the one-horned Rhinoceros. How to Reach Meghauli: By Air: The most easiest and direct route is to fly from Kathmandu to Meghauli which will take only 25 minutes. It takes 10-30 minutes to go on foot to any hotel, resort or Machan by riding on bullock cart or within 5 minutes by jeep. By Road: Micro Burs or Private Car will take approximately 5 hours direct from Kathmandu to Meghauli. You will also be taken from there to your hotel. Private cars buses are also available from Pokhara, Lumbini and other major cities. By River: After leaving Kathmandu or Pokhara, you can enjoy a rafting trip starting from fishing and ending at Mugling. Rafting trips are also available from Mugling Dev-Ghat to Golaghat. What to Bring: Flash light, binoculars, repellent, sun-hat, sun-goggles, casual and comfortable clothes and shoes for easy movement while on safari, During the winter months (Nov to Feb) woolen cap, gloves, sweater and jacket may be necessary in the morning and evening.
